AIDS Service Center provides HIV-related services to individuals and families in Los Angeles County. As one of the county’s most comprehensive AIDS Service organizations and a national advocate on HIV issues, AIDS Service Center provides services that reflect the needs of contemporary and emerging populations affected by HIV/AIDS. The Center offers food, housing services, transportation, comprehensive case management, child care, mental health services and advocacy to more than 1,500 clients and their families each year. In addition, AIDS Service Center reaches 4,000 community members annually with HIV prevention and education services and offers free and anonymous HIV testing.

This COLORFUL “fair” is held annually on the first Sunday in December, provides opportunities to purchase gifts (or make donations in lieu thereof) that benefit the poor and homeless on a local, national and international basis. Volunteers are needed to help with planning and publicity, as well as to serve as cashiers, gift card table helpers and calligraphers.

Claiming the Blessing is a combined effort of the three leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender justice organizations in the Episcopal Church: Integrity, Oasis and Beyond Inclusion. Claiming the Blessing is a partnership working with other justice organizations and individual church leaders to promote wholeness in human relationships. The organization is committed to obtaining approval of a liturgical blessing, which celebrates the holy love in a faithful sexual relationship, enabling couples in these relationships to see in each other the image of God.

CORAL (Communities Organizing Resources to Advance Learning) is a statewide initiative of The James Irvine Foundation, developed in Pasadena by the Office for Creative Connections (see page 25). The mission of CORAL is to improve the academic achievement of students through their participation in out-of-school programs that provide quality, diverse curriculum and involve families, schools and community partners. CORAL Pasadena is a network of five program sites and the CORAL Innovation Center, a multi-use facility that hosts a youth institute for high school students and programs for local organizations and businesses.

Day One is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing alcohol- and other drug-related problems in Pasadena and Altadena. Programs offered for youth and parents (some available in Spanish) include Youth Month, Youth Advocate Program, Parenting Awareness Month, Prevention Institute, Leadership Development and Coordinating Council. Foster Care Project (FCP) provides community education, policy/advocacy and direct services for children and youth under state supervision and for young adults recently emancipated from foster care. FCP recruits volunteers for such activities as becoming a tutor/mentor; taking a foster child shopping for school; collecting food for foster family Thanksgiving baskets; and sending a birthday gift.

Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA) is a non-sectarian, San Francisco-based non-profit organization founded in June 2000, by physicians, nurses and religious leaders to respond to the accelerating AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. GAIA partners with village-level religious leaders and organizations in rural areas to prevent the spread of HIV and to care for people living with AIDS. They assist communities in developing locally initiated grassroots projects focused on AIDS prevention and care.

The Hunger Ministry raises funds from donations collected at the cookie table on the lawn on Sundays. These funds are distributed regularly to Pasadena agencies that feed those in need. Volunteers are needed to serve at the table on Sundays. Baked goods are also welcome.

This taskforce represents All Saints’ commitment to inclusion to the wider Episcopal Church and to the community at large through two program groups. “Beyond Inclusion” concentrates on helping churches to fully welcome lesbians and gays, most visibly through supporting same-gender blessings and advocating for marriage equality. “Across the Divide” focuses on equipping parishioners to talk across the theological divide with those in the Christian community whose perspectives on inclusion differ from ours.

The Office for Creative Connections (OCC) is a community outreach ministry established as a gift to the City of Pasadena in 1984 by the vestry of All Saints Church. OCC identifies local needs and resources and brings people together around issues of common concern. The OCC methodology consists of listening, discerning, reporting and connecting. This process has led to the creation of Young & Healthy, a health care program for uninsured children, and Day One, an advocacy program that addresses problems and policies related to alcohol and other drugs. Both programs are now separately incorporated in the city.
Current program areas include:
Transformational Journeys Ministry
Physical journeys of faith for parishioners, transforming them through challenging encounters with other local and global communities.
City Conversations
Training/dialogue workshops and roundtable discussions with a diverse group of community leaders with a vision to “… promote policies and practices that create a just and peaceful community, and to identify and eradicate policies and practices that perpetuate racial and ethnic inequities.” Participants are City and School District officials often including the Mayor, the Superintendent of Schools, Chief of Police, directors of non-profit organizations, community volunteers and activists. The goal is to move toward action that will have long-term impact in the community.
CORAL
An after school program in five neighborhood sites in Pasadena designed to enhance children’s academic achievement, specifically in literacy, through their involvement in quality after-school programs as well as a year round Youth Institute.

Sabeel is an ecumenical grassroots liberation movement among Palestinian Christians. It is an ecumenical center for Palestinian Liberation Theology which seeks to make the Gospel contextually relevant. This dynamic ministry promotes and supports a socially responsible local and world economy that values life, earth’s resources and spiritual community through personal choices, education and public action. Union Station Foundation is a community-based, nondenominational, nonprofit social service agency serving homeless and low-income families and individuals in the Pasadena and west San Gabriel Valley since 1973. Services include well-balanced and appetizing breakfasts and lunches (free to all who come), special programs for women and families with children, and “Sources,” the Foundation’s career development and job placement program. Volunteer orientation meetings take place on the fourth Saturday of every month.

This thriving ministry to students at Willard Elementary School in Pasadena pairs volunteers with eager learners from grades K-5. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are also provided for parents. Volunteer one hour on Monday evenings during the school year to tutor a student or teach ESL to parents.
